The Rev. Michael J. Ryan

Rector

Fr. Michael Ryan joined St. John's in January of 2020 and we are very honored to have him. He arrived here after 10 years as Rector at The Church of the Epiphany in South Haven, Michgan. He and his wife, Susan, now reside here in Kirkland.

Fr. Michael was ordained to the priesthood on December 20, 2009, in that same church, Eiphany. When Michael arrived at Epihany, the parish had long suffered and were numbered fewer than 20 people: 15 adults and four children. Over Michael's 10 years of spiritual leadership, the congregation more than quintupled, blossomming into a vibrant and radically welcoming community.

He describes his liturgical style as "reverent, relaxed, broad church." His joy and passion are found in worship as a time of reflection and awakening. He believes that the Sunday worshiping community is the Body of Christ "re-membered." In other words: the gift of ritual connects us through merciful participation in God's outpouring life and love. Worshiping consciously and intentionally causes us to experience our liturgies as a coherent set of practices that shape us into the image and likeness of God while, paradoxically, making us more fully human.

Rev. Canon John Fergueson

Priest Associate for Foundational Formation

After graduation from Albion College in 1966, John enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served a year tour of duty in Vietnam with the 15th Marine Counterintelligence Team in Northing Quang Tri Province, RVN.

In 1968, he entered Episcopal Seminary, and was ordained an Episcopal Priest in 1972. John served three congregations in the Diocese of Western Michigan, including 4 years as Dean/Canon Pastor of the Cathedral Church of Christ the King in Kalamazoo Michigan. He was made a Canon Honorary of the Cathedral in March of 1979. He retired from parish ministry in 2014, after serving 30 years as Rector of the Church of the Redeemer, Kenmore. In the Diocese of Olympia, John also taught Systematic Theology at the School of Theology for several years.

A major focus of his ministry in all the congregations he served was teaching weekly Adult Education classes. The topics of those classes were designed to give Adults the opportunity to learn foundational information about basic Anglican theology, Prayer Book liturgy, spirituality, and Holy Scripture. John describes his passion for foundational formation as “helping people to develop basic competencies to share with others the extraordinary treasures of our Anglican Tradition, and its proclamation of the Good News of Jesus Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit.”
