2021 Lenten Study
2021 Lenten Study begins on Ash Wednesday, February 17th,
at 7pm via Zoom and continues weekly on Wednesdays in Lent until March 31st. Compline follows at 8:30pm.

The BIPOC people of Kirkland (Black, Indigenous, and People Of Color) are crying out for an end to racism. Recently St. John’s has done a few things to make us and our neighbors aware of racism recently, but how can the people of St. John’s address the systemic causes? First, we must do inner work.
Combating Racism, Changing the World, and Becoming Better Ancestors. These are our goals as we study the book Me and White Supremacy by Layla Saad.
This book will aid us in identifying the impact of white privilege and white supremacy in our lives. Our first session will be an introduction by our facilitator Nikayla Rice, cofounder of Eastside Embrace, whom you can read about here. Nikayla is a passionate community organizer focused on diversity and racial justice.
“I am delighted and honored that Nikayla Rice, an amazing young artist and activist I met last year, will be leading our Lenten Study along with Deacon Missy,” said Father Michael. “Deacon Missy and Nikayla partnered on a similar project for the residents and employees of The Chateau at Bothell Landing that was by all accounts a transformative experience.”
Over the second through sixth sessions we will read the book, journal, and then share our thoughts, insights and experiences. The last session, the Wednesday in Holy Week, will be a summary and reflection. Our conversations will be on Zoom with Fr. Michael as the Zoom host, and Nikayla and Missy as Breakout Room facilitators. This will be a safe, confidential, respectful, and a no-judgment study space. Zoom coordinates will be emailed to registered participants. Compline will follow each session at 8:30.
Copies of the book and a study journal will be provided and paid for by St. John’s. If you wish to participate, please email Deacon Missy or call her at 206-910-7321. Once registered, you can pick up your book and journal at the Church Office or we can get it to you in advance of our first session February 17th. A commitment to attend all the sessions is required. Space is limited to 20 participants, so register right away.(We are in the process of identifying an additional facilitator in order to accommodate more than 20, but don’t count on it!) It is ideal to have the book before our study begins, but it is not essential.
Nikayla Rice is a passionate community organizer focused on diversity and racial justice. A background is consistently characterized by an unwavering, steadfast dedication to enhancing social awareness and improving 'cause-based' organizational performance.
Nikayla has worked tirelessly in cultivating deep and personal relationships with her partners through the use of in-person and virtual meetings while also organizing and executing events such as training, meetups and other community-related activities designed to further the movement of awareness!
