ALPHA IS COMING:  The Alpha Course is a ten-week practical introduction to the Christian faith where people consider questions such as what is the meaning of life? What happens when we die? What relevance does Jesus have for our lives? How do we deal with guilt?  Each weekly session begins with an informal dinner, followed by a large group presentation time, and ends with small group discussion and interaction. ALPHA began in an Anglican church in London and is now held in thousands of churches around the world. Join others who have found answers to their questions about life and God and how they relate. ALPHA is for people investigating Christianity, for newcomers to the church, new Christians, and for those Christians who want to brush up on the basics. The next ALPHA course is planned to start September 30th at St. John’s. If you are interested in participating in the course, more information and registration forms are available in the narthex.

FOOD & FELLOWSHIP:  Interested in joining a foyer group?  Sign up in the narthex.

We are looking to make this more of an Eastside opportunity, so, if you would like to join us on the second Saturday of the month at Holy Spirit, please do. Our next meeting is September 8th, 10am to Noon. If you have questions please contact larry Morris at PLarryMorris@gmail.com or 425-647-8054.

ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 5, 2012

WELCOME BACK Fr. Scot!

FORWARD DAY BY DAY: the new quarterly booklet has arrived for August/September/October 2012. The price of the small booklet is $1 a copy and the large print is $1.50. They are located on the counter in the Narthex.

SUMMERFEST: Local civic and business leaders are organizing a new arts and music festival to take place in downtown Kirkland and all funds will benefit Lake Washington Schools Foundation.  SummerFest  will be held next Friday and Saturday, August 10 and 11, 2012, in downtown Kirkland. There will be live bands, a performance of the Shakespeare play “The Winter’s Tale,” gourmet food trucks, art displays, vendor booths, a beer and wine garden, and a variety of children’s activities including a display of different trucks that kids can see and touch. Street performers will also entertain throughout the downtown area and St. John’s will be represented Saturday, August 11th. Share the love of your church home with the city! Contact the church office or Kristin.gulley@comcast.net to sign up to spend an hour or two at our booth #16.

ST. JOHN'S SUMMER ALL PARISH PICNIC: The St. John's Women invites you to come to a summer picnic at Juanita Beach Park, on Sunday, August 12, immediately following the 10AM service. This will be an informal group picnic - bring your own food and beverages, and don't forget a blanket or folding chair! There will be some games for children and adults, and there might even be a softball game at the park across the Street - unless there is a league game already scheduled. The kids (and adults) can play on the beach and in the water - we might even have a volleyball game organized! Or you can choose to just sit and chat with your friends from St. John's. This will be a very relaxed afternoon - if we are very lucky, the Men's Group might volunteer to barbecue for us - hint, hint! There is plenty of parking both at the Beach Park and across the street so come and join us for an afternoon at Juanita Beach. Please look for a sign-up sheet in the narthex so we have an idea of how many people are planning to come. “Singing in the Rain” can be fun, but picnicking in the rain, not so good!  So, if the weather is bad, the picnic will have to be cancelled – OR, we could have a “sort-of” picnic in Marsh Hall?  SJW would love to see you there!  Questions or comments?  Call Paula Miller at 425-820-6415.

KIN (Kirkland Interfaith Network) BACK TO SCHOOL PROJECT:  There are over 5,400 low income children in the Lake Washington School District who need a little community support to make their  education as successful as possible. You can help support KIN by purchasing some Back-to-School supplies. The most needed items this year are new: pencil boxes, large glue sticks, colored pencils, markers (wide and narrow tip), red pens/pencils, USB thumb/flash drives (any size), and scientific calculators (TI-30 type); no crayons, regular pens or pencils, please. You can also help to support KIN by writing a check made payable to KIN Back to School Project. Supplies and/or dollars are due on Sunday, August 12th.  For details contact Cynthia Shurtleff at cdshurtleff@msn.com, 454-1893, or (206) 498-8216. Thank you!

JOIN THE FUNThe St. John’s Youth Group presents a downtown Seattle scavenger hunt.  We’ll meet at St. John’s at 9:30AM on Wednesday, August 15, and take the bus to downtown Seattle.  You will get to explore downtown Seattle during the scavenger hunt, travel the “Ride Free” zone, visit new and familiar landmarks, and spend time with your friends.  We’ll eat lunch downtown.  Bring money for lunch (approx. $10) and bus fare (Youth:  $1.25 each way; Adults:  $2.25/$3.00; you will need to have exact change).  Sign –up:  Church Office (425-827-3077 or office@stjohnskirkland.org), there is also a sign –up sheet in the Narthex, or contact JohnOkerman@comcast.net/425-481-6127.  We also need some adult chaperones to join us on this fun day! See the attached flyer.

HYC IS COMING! St. John’s will be hosting  a Diocesan High School Youth Conferences (HYC), September 28-30.  We are looking for volunteers to fill some key roles in making this a successful weekend.  Youth from around the Diocese will arrive Friday night and will be with us for the weekend.  The Diocese and volunteers will take care of the program but St. John’s needs to fill two key roles, food and sleep!  The youth will be assigned to stay in our homes to sleep and so we will need a Housing Coordinator.  This person will need to identify enough homes in our congregation to sleep 50-70 high school youth.  They will not need beds, but require floor space.  The other key role is the Food Coordinator.  This person will put together a team that will cook meals for the youth over the weekend.  This would include Saturday lunch and dinner and a sack lunch for Sunday. We have a guidebook that will help you along the way.  Many of us will need to open our homes to house the youth and some will need to help cook.  If you feel called to fill either of these roles, Housing Coordinator or Food Coordinator, please call the church office at 425-827-3077.  This opportunity is a wonderful gift to give to the young people of our diocese.  Please consider offering your time and talents!  Let’s make this weekend a fabulous one!

THE ALPHA COURSE RETURNS: The Alpha course will be presented again this fall and team members are needed to facilitate this wonderful ministry. As you may know, the Alpha Course is a short practical introduction to the Christian Faith and is an exciting way to develop Christian fellowship. There are many different ways to help. You can be a small group leader, intercessor, and helper. Or you can be “a behind-the-scenes” person, helping to cook, setup, and cleanup. If you are not sure whether or not you are called to be involved, come see Fr. Scot and he will be happy to answer any questions. There won’t be any pressure to make a commitment but he hopes to nurture your interest. Help people investigate the great questions of faith and the purpose of life. Contact Fr. Scot for more information and join the team!

THANK YOU FROM THE WOW COMMITTEE:  Bricks are still available for a $10 donation per brick. Checks should be made payable to “Rebuild Our Church in Haiti.” Our campaign is close to reaching its goal of $4,000. Please mail checks to Susie Sanders at 5404 – 162nd Ave NE, Redmond, WA 98052.

DITTY BAGS ARE NEEDED:  If you are looking for a summer project, please consider making ditty bags or knitting a watch cap. Our goal this year is to have 200 ditty bags and 100 hats.  If you are wondering what a ditty bag is, Donna Raymond can answer that question, and if you are wondering how to make a watch cap, Donna has a pattern.  If you would like to see a ditty bag which is already made, Donna Raymond has arranged for a demo table in Marsh Hall, Sunday, August 19th. She will show you the technique and will also have fabric, patterns and string available for you to pick up. The deadline to have all caps and bags at St. John’s is Sunday, November 4th. Your help and support in reaching our goals this year will be greatly appreciated.

TREASURE SALESave the Date!! October 20 and 21.  Set up on Friday, October 19th.  Please plan to start collecting treasures that you would like to donate.
