Outreach at St. John's takes many forms. We provide financial assistance to some in our community that are in need of help with their water bills and drivers license fees. We support individual ministries within our church that are affiliated with larger international organizations such as Habitat for Humanity (building simple, decent, affordable houses in partnership with those who lack adequate shelter).
We support local groups such as KIN (the Kirkland Interfaith Network is responsible for The Birthday Corner at Hopelink, Crop Walk, Hunger Awareness Day, Back-to-School Project, Holiday Fair and Christmas Giving Tree), KITH ( Kirkland Interfaith Transitions in Housing assists individuals and families on the Eastside who are caught in a homelessness crisis), and Hopelink that provides food for survival and education for self-sufficiency through the Hopelink Food Banks. We are also part of an Emergency Feeding Program that assists in providing food for our neighbors in need and we supply needy mothers and their babies knitted garments and afghans.
Each year during the Christmas season many seafarers on merchant vessels are blessed with recognition from the Christian community in the form of Ditty Bags. These bags are filled with personal items and given to the seafarers calling on the Port of Seattle during the month of December. Making and filling these ditty bags provides our church congregations with an opportunity to take part in an outreach ministry serving seafarers of many different nationalities and religions. It also introduces these seafarers to the love of Christ by receiving gifts from people whom they do not know.
Each merchant vessel calling on the Port of Seattle has a crew of 20-25 seafarers. Historically we have distributed between 800-900 ditty bags each year.
