Faith Formation - Make it Lifelong |
At St. John's we believe faith formation is an important tool in helping parents guide and nurture the spiritual lives of children. That is why we offer faith formation for children preschool through 12th grade. This one hour a week gives children and youth an opportunity to experience the Word of God through community and real-life relationships and, when in partnership with parents, helps prepare them to become loving disciples and servants of Christ.
Our youth Sunday school classes meet Sundays at noon September through May. Grades 7th through 12th are using Journey 2 Adulthood, a program that celebrates the transition from youth to adulthood while exploring spirituality and service. The 7th-9th grade session, Rite 13, focuses on celebrating the individuality of each young person and their creative potential. The session for the 10th and 12th grades, J2A, engages youth with the skills and critical thinking involved with aduthood. Both classes participate in several service projects throughout the year, including a mission trip in the summer. For more information about the Journey to Adulthood program visit www.leaderresources.org/j2a.
Because we believe that children are a valuable part of our parish, we do not have Sunday school classes for grades preschool through 5th on the first Sunday of the month from September to May. We call this "First Sunday". This gives children an opportunity to attend the entire worship service with their families. There is a children's sermon, and the music is family friendly.
Children's Sunday school classes meet at 9:45 a.m. September through May. The children join their families at the passing of the peace. For children first through fifth grade we are using Wood Lake Publishing's Seasons of the Spirit, a lectionary-based resource created by an international/multi-denominational team of writers and editors that empowers the children to be transformed in Christ. Please visit Seasons curriculum page for more information at www.spiritseasons.com. For children in preschool through kindergarten we use basic Bible stories, verses and skills that help children develop positive attitudes toward God, Jesus, the church and community. |
